Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) has indicted 13 police officers for allegations of handcuffing and torturing some children at an orphanage.

Today, PG Hussain Shameem said that the 13 officers are those who actively participate in the torture according to the evidence they have collected. He said that children at the orphanage are under the special protection of the state.

Sources say that they are being charged with inhumane actions under the Anti-Torture Act. If convicted, they face a prison sentence of one to three years.

This is a case of torturing children of the Vilimale' Orphanage during a camp at K. Thulusdhoo held from 20 to 22 April 2017 organised by the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services and the Maldives Police Service.

Cases were brought against the former Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Zenisha Shaheed Zaki and the Head of Family and Child Protection Unit of the Maldives Police Service, Mohamed Basheer but they were dropped by the PG Office due to lack of evidence.
