Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) has decided not to press charges against the former Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Zenisha Shahid Zaki in the case of illegal event by officers while trying to control a violent confrontation at an orphanage.
Public Prosecutor, Ahmed Shafeeu today said that they decided to drop the charges due to the lack of evidence.
A case against the Head of Family and Child Protection Unit of the Maldives Police Service, Mohamed Basheer was also sent to the PG Office for prosecution however, that case is also being dropped due to lack of evidence as well.
Following the allegations against her by the Human Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Zenisha said that she has never engaged in criminal behaviour and the case against her is a fabricated one with a personal motive.
Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed also chimed in saying the best thing would be to retract the case.
However, cases have been sent to the Criminal Court against 13 Police Officers under the Anti-Torture Act for inhumane actions.
