MP for Addu-Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam has said that currently there is no reason to declare a state of emergency in the country to arrest extremists.

She made the remark after the MDP Congress passed the resolution to allow the Maldives Police Service to declare a state of national emergency and arrest extremists after the Speaker of the Parliament and President of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed met with some of the members on Sunday and presented the resolution.

Speaking on Sangu TV's "Khabarah Fahu" program last night, MP Rozaina said that she believes some of the statement by Speaker Nasheed regarding extremism in the country. And that she also accepts that it is getting worse day by day.

Recording concern about the situation, MP Rozaina said that important steps need to be taken to intervene but she does not believe it can be done through Nasheed's strategy.

She said that if Speaker Nasheed is unhappy, he can talk to the President and resolve it and going in to a state of emergency regarding the matter is not something she believes in.

The Meedhoo MP said that the security forces have not made any requests for a state of emergency and if there is cause for it, the decision will be made by the President.

Rozaina further highlighted that the spread of extremism is a national crisis and all the political leaders need to work together to stop it.

On Sunday's MDP Congress meeting, the Leader of the MDP Parliamentary Group, the MP for Mid-Henveiru constituency, Ali Azim said that the authority to declare a state of national emergency and so before presenting a resolution that includes a portion on a state of emergency, it should be discussed with the President.

MP Azim presented that Nasheed and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih discuss the matter before passing the resolution. However, his motion did not get enough support.
