Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the recent Judicial Reform proposed by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was not specifically targeting any one member of the Judiciary.

MDP had proposed monumental changes to various branches of the government at the concluding event of the party’s Parliamentary Campaign Policy workshop held the past Saturday. The proposals at the concluding event included motions to deposing the Supreme Court of some of its powers as well as bringing various changes to Court’s registrar.

A tweet sent out by former President Nasheed said that the proposal was made with sincerity, encompassing MDP’s experiences within the past 10 years. President Nasheed also requested the assistance of all Judges and Attorneys in implementing the proposal.

Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel ahmed had criticised the proposal by MDP. He had tweeted that the proposal to reform the Judiciary was unlawful. Dr. Jameel also noted that while Judicial reform is paramount, the MDP’s current proposal violates article 141 of the Constitution.

The former VP had said that MDP’s proposal violated the law from various angles. This includes the powers afforded to the Supreme Court by countries such as India or even suo moto actions and constitutional cases.

Dr. Jameel stressed that lawmaking should not target specific individuals and said that goal of such reform should be the betterment of institutions.
