The schools in Male’ City has been reopened after ten months after closing down amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today is the first day that students from all grades are attending schools since the COVID lock down. However, schools in Gaafu Alifu Atoll Dhevvadhoo, Laamu Atoll Fonadhoo and Gan remain closed as the islands are under monitoring due to COVID.

With the pandemic affecting the education systems on a global scale, the Maldivian Education Ministry have decided to start the Academic Year from the middle of the calendar year. According to the Academic Calendar, the year starts on 10 August. And today starts the second term of the previous academic year.

Schools in the atolls were opened during the pandemic with classes for the grades 1 and above. The Ministry approved pre-school classes at the schools in late October 2020. And since the Male’ City schools were closed on 12 March 2020, only students in grade six and above have had classes.

In a video released by the Education Ministry regarding the start of the second term, Minister Aishath Ali said that it is a great loss for students to be away from education and requested that all students be sent to the school as the second term starts and assured that all schools are safe places.

The Education Minister also said that the schools have done a lot of work to prepare to start the term and hope that all students can go to the schools for classes.
