Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) has decided not to pursue charges against those who violated the lock down order.
A press statement issued today by the Prosecutor General’s Office said that they have decided not to pursue charges in the cases investigated by the Maldives Police Service following the violation of the Male’ Area lock down amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the PG Office will be requesting the relevant state offices to do the needful to acquire the fines for the violation.
The PG Office said that they have decided not to pursue charges in an effort to provide equal treatment as a number of people who violated the lock were people who got trapped in the city when the lock down came, who were visiting for various reasons and it would be in their best interest not to bring forth a criminal record out of the situation they were forced in to.
And during a time of great economic impact with a spike in unemployment is also part of the reason not to pursue charges according to the PG Office.
