The father of the Maldivian Ambassador to USA, Thilmeeza Hussain and the MP for Thulhaadhoo constituency, Hisaan Hussain, Hithaadhoo Sheikh Hussain Yousuf has passed away.

One Online has learned that Sheikh Hussain Yousuf passed away last night during treatment following a stroke in Bangalore, India.

Sheikh Yousuf has served the Maldivian republic for over 25 years in positions such as a High Court Judge worked at the President’s Office. He also served as the MP for Baa Atoll and was the Director General of Justice Ministry before when he retired.

Shiekh Hussain Yousuf is popular in Baa Atoll and had earned the respect and love of its people and ran a free private school in Baa Atoll Hithaadhoo for years.

He contributed notable work to promote religious studies and worked to get opportunities for Maldivian students to go abroad to acquire an education on the Islamic faith so far as to provide funding from his own pocket. And he reclaimed land in Male’ City and ran school where students were taught Arabic by the name of “Thoiba Madharusaa” (Thoiba School), named after his eldest daughter, Thoiba Hussain Yousuf. The current Thoiba Mosque in Male’ City is on the same land.

Sheikh Yousuf was also involved when the Maldives first began sending people on the Hajj Pilgrimage.

He also played a key role in forming the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) working on the front lines when political party activities began in the country. He played an important role in bringing political reform to Baa Atoll, especially to the sector of Thulhaadhoo.

Sheikh Hussain Yousuf got his education at the Islamic University of Medinah in Saudi Arabia and aside from the Dhivehi language, he was fluent in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu and Hindhi and known for his Arabic calligraphy.

He is survived by a wife and seven children of his own, 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren along with two step children he raised as his own.
