Maldives have signed the New York Convention; convention on recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards.
At a special ceremony held in New York, USA, the international standards were set and the Maldives signed the convention yesterday by the Attorney General, Ibrahim Riffath.
The Attorney General took to Twitter after the signing saying that it was a historic milestone that reiterates the Maldivian government’s commitment to promote investor confidence.

The US Center for Asian Affairs also tweeted after the signing ceremony congratulating the Maldives and expressing “we are happy to work with” the Maldives.
With the agreement signed, Maldivian courts must follow the ruling of the International Arbitration Courts. Maldives is the 161st country to sign the convention.
