The Attorney General’s Office has said that that the High Court ruling against Ibrahim Shah, who was charge with rape, abuse and negligence murder of his former wife, Ziyaada Naeem (Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo) who died from sexual and physical abuse, is a progressive step in the State’s efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women.

After the Criminal Court ruled that Ibrahim Shah was not guilty of raping his wife, the case was appealed at the High Court and the court found him guilty of rape and sentenced him to three years in prison.

Following the High Court decision, the official Twitter Account of the Attorney Genera’s Office said that “Today’s landmark decision by the High Court is a progressive step in the State’s efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

They also thanked the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Maldives Police Service in securing the conviction.

“We remain resolute in countering violence against women.” The Attorney General’s Office said.

Regarding the death of Ziyaada Naeem, Police have previously said that the investigation learned that Shah has raped and physically abused her.

She died while undergoing treatment for various injuries at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on 28 December 2005.
