President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu will provide a major long-term solution to traffic congestion across Malé.
Speaking in the fourth episode of the President’s Office podcast The Pulse, the President said widening and modernising the road is one of the government's highest-priority infrastructure projects aimed at improving transport for the public.
He said work on the current phase is nearing completion and the section from Izzuddin Jetty to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is expected to open next week.
The President said the project will introduce around 500 new parking spaces on reclaimed land, replacing roadside parking and improving traffic flow. He added that new quay walls will provide additional berthing space for launches, making cargo loading and unloading more efficient.
The redevelopment will also include shaded waiting areas, benches and tree planting to create a more comfortable environment for pedestrians.
The President said repairs to roads from the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area to West Park will help ease congestion in Malé's main commercial district.
He added that the government's long-term strategy extends beyond widening roads and includes managing the number of vehicles entering Malé to reduce congestion sustainably.
