The United States and Iran held technical talks in Doha on Wednesday aimed at reaching an agreement on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and securing a lasting ceasefire.
The discussions are based on a 14-point interim agreement signed last month to end the conflict that began after US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February. The deal also seeks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and establish 60 days of negotiations towards a permanent peace agreement.
US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, met Qatar's prime minister ahead of the talks but did not attend the negotiations. Qatar and Pakistan are acting as mediators.
Iran is seeking international recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and its authority to impose fees on ships using the waterway, Iranian officials said.
Shipping traffic through the strait has partially resumed after being disrupted by the conflict. The Strait of Hormuz previously handled about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.
