Minister of Environment and Tourism Thoriq Ibrahim has announced efforts to provide financial assistance to resorts affected by the decline in tourist arrivals due to the ongoing Middle East war.

Speaking at a press conference, Thoriq said average tourist arrivals have dropped by around 1,150, impacting the tourism sector. He noted that discussions have been held with the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) to assess the situation.

The government is working with the Bank of Maldives (BML) and resorts to offer financial support and ease operational challenges. Some resorts are also coordinating with banks to assist tourists.

Thoriq added that efforts are underway to increase flight frequency and bring in new airlines, including plans to resume operations with Ethiopian Airlines.

To boost arrivals, marketing campaigns have been intensified in India and China, with a major digital campaign targeting Indian and ASEAN markets set to launch soon.
