US President Donald Trump has announced that he has cancelled a planned second wave of military attacks on Venezuela, citing cooperation from the South American country.
The decision follows recent developments in which Venezuela reportedly released a large number of political prisoners, which the US administration views as a positive step towards easing tensions. Trump said this cooperation showed a willingness to work towards peace.
He also indicated that the United States and Venezuela are engaging constructively, particularly in discussions related to rebuilding Venezuela’s oil and gas infrastructure. Despite cancelling further attacks, Trump said US ships would remain in place for safety and security reasons.
The announcement comes after recent US military action that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Trump has since suggested relations with Venezuela’s interim leadership are improving.
Trump also said he plans to meet US oil executives, adding that American companies could invest at least USD 100 billion in Venezuela’s energy sector as cooperation continues.
