The government is addressing long-standing challenges faced by businesses operating through the Maldivian airport and the Malé Commercial Port, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said.

The issues, particularly affecting small and medium-sized enterprises, were raised during a meeting between President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and business leaders on December 17. At the meeting, the President acknowledged the concerns of the business community and instructed relevant authorities to take action.

Speaking on the first episode of a new podcast launched – ‘Tharujamaanaa Eku’ – by the President’s Office, Minister Saeed outlined the steps being taken to improve operations and reduce difficulties for businesses. He said government agencies have been directed to respond to the concerns raised by traders and logistics operators.

As part of the measures, service hours at key facilities have been extended, and the demurrage period for goods has been increased from three to five days. These changes aim to provide businesses with more flexibility and reduce operational pressure.

The Minister also noted that the government is working closely with the Ministry of Finance and the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority to address financial issues affecting businesses that require government-related support. He expressed confidence that these efforts will lead to tangible benefits for the business community.
