Shangri-La Villingili Resort in Addu City has reopened after being closed for five years, with the first tourist welcomed back to the resort.
The resort was closed in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in more than 500 employees losing their jobs. Its reopening marks a significant milestone for the tourism sector in Addu City.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, Shangri-La Villingili is a resort that offers the highest level of services. The ministry said the reopening fulfils a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The resort is expected to be officially reopened by President Dr Mohamed Waheed.
The ministry also stated that the government held extensive discussions with the resort’s management to facilitate the reopening. This included identifying necessary repairs, conducting site visits and issuing required permits in line with regulations.
The reopening of Shangri-La Villingili Resort is expected to provide a major boost to the economy of Addu City. The Tourism Ministry said it will create new job opportunities for local residents and help revitalise the tourism industry in the region.
