A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Taiwan on Wednesday evening, shaking buildings in the capital, Taipei, but causing no immediate reports of damage. The quake occurred at 5:47 pm local time with a depth of 11.9 km, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration. The US Geological Survey estimated the magnitude at 6.0.

Alerts were issued for several cities including Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung and Tainan. The intensity reached four on Taiwan’s seven-tier scale in Hualien and Pingtung counties. Footage from local media showed items falling and breaking in supermarkets in Taitung.

The National Fire Agency reported no damage to transport networks, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) confirmed that the quake did not meet the threshold for factory evacuations. Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.
