A resolution has been submitted to the People's Majlis to ascertain the views of its members on eliminating the price differences in electricity and water services for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malé and the atolls, and to provide these services at a single price.

The resolution was submitted to the Parliament by Ahmed Shamheed, MDP Member for Hulhumalé South Constituency.

In the resolution, Shamheed stated that Chapter Two of the Constitution stipulates that rights and freedoms must be granted without discrimination based on family, birthplace, or any other factor.

However, he noted that the prices set by STELCO, Fenaka Corporation, and MWSC for their services differ, with one price for the Malé region and another for other islands in the atolls. He further highlighted that there are significant disparities between these prices.

Consequently, the cost incurred by small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the islands for essential services like water and electricity is excessively high.

Further points highlighted by Shamheed in the resolution:

  • The cost of electricity for small and medium-sized enterprises in the atolls has increased by an amount between 40% and 70%.
  • The cost for water services has increased by 35%.
  • These businesses include economically crucial industries such as guesthouses.
  • This also presents a significant challenge to increasing productivity and opening up the Maldives to new industries.
  • The financial burden on small and medium-sized enterprises has increased, making it difficult to sustain businesses, which is a concern for the public.
