Government of Maldives will continue to expand opportunities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), recognising their critical role in building a resilient and inclusive economy, said Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef.

Speaking at the Maldives Side Event titled “Empowering MSMEs in SIDS through Grants: Lessons from the Maldives Experience”, held on the sidelines of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Seville, Spain, the Vice President reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to empowering the sector, which makes up 90 per cent of all registered businesses in the country.

He outlined key initiatives such as the Creative Economy Strategic Action Plan, which aims to increase access to finance, provide collaborative workspaces, and enhance market access. The plan also prioritises capacity-building through training, legal support, and the development of tailored financial tools.

Highlighting the Government’s inclusive approach, the Vice President pointed to targeted support for women and youth-led enterprises, especially in island communities. He referenced the second phase of the Fashaa Madhadhu Loanprogramme, which allocates 25 per cent of its funding specifically for women with disabilities.

He also emphasised continued efforts to expand banking services, improve transport infrastructure, and strengthen digital connectivity to create a more enabling environment for MSMEs across the nation.

The Vice President is currently attending the FfD4 conference, taking place in Seville from 30 June to 3 July 2025.
