Parliament’s Whole House Committee has approved the bill proposing changes to the laws governing the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Election Commission (EC), and it is now open for public feedback.

The amendments, introduced by Felidhoo MP Adam Zahir for the ACC and Kela MP Abdulla Shareef for the EC, aim to grant direct powers to the President and Vice President of both commissions. The bill seeks to standardise the process of appointing these leaders, requiring the President to nominate candidates from among commission members, subject to parliamentary approval.

Additional provisions include:

  • Streamlining the resignation process for commission heads.
  • Filling any vacant leadership positions within 72 hours.

Following the review of public feedback, the bill will be presented for a final vote in Parliament.
