Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has stated that efforts will remain steadfast in stopping actions that tarnish the Islamic identity of the Maldives.
Shaheem made these remarks in a post on X regarding a symbolic same-sex marriage ceremony conducted for two men at a Maldivian resort.
The minister stated that action must be taken against those who act in violation of the Constitution of the Maldives and other relevant laws. Shaheem also noted that it was his ministry that submitted the case to the police for investigation and legal action.
"We must remain steadfast in saving the Maldives from such atrocities that plunge the Maldives into materialism and tarnish its Islamic identity," the minister said.
Images of the ceremony, which was organized like a wedding and held on a resort beach, were circulated on social media, drawing widespread criticism.
Police stated in a release issued today that this is an unlawful act and that they are actively investigating the matter.
Given that the state religion of the Maldives is Islam, authorities have urged all parties not to engage in acts that contravene religious principles, Maldivian laws, and general social and moral standards, and to ensure that foreign employees working in resorts, guesthouses, and other sectors do not commit such acts.
Police stated that legal action will be taken against those who engage in such acts.
Holding symbolic wedding ceremonies for tourists at Maldivian resorts is a common occurrence.
