The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) predicted today that heavy rain and potential flooding incidents could affect some islands across the country.

According to the Met Office, due to the strengthening of southwest monsoon winds across the Maldivian region, widespread rain accompanied by thunder and heavy showers in some areas is expected from today until Wednesday. The agency also noted that heavy rainfall in certain areas could lead to flooding incidents.

In light of this weather pattern, the Met Office has urged the public to stay attentive to the latest weather updates. Furthermore, the agency urged all parties to take preemptive measures to safeguard against risks posed by flooding and adverse weather. In particular, individuals traveling at sea during this period have been urged to check weather conditions before beginning their journeys.

The Met Office stated that weather conditions have deteriorated across various parts of the Maldives since yesterday. The agency estimates that adverse weather will continue to affect various regions for the next four days.

Yesterday, Gaafu Alif Kolamaafushi bore the brunt of the damage from the heavy rains. Floodwaters accumulated within the island were drained out by cutting channels across various parts of the island. Additionally, an MNDF team arrived in Kolamaafushi last night to provide assistance and remains active on the island.

In addition, a waterspout struck Shaviyani Lhaimagu today, causing significant damage to the roofs of about four houses and several warehouses. A person sustained a head injury after being struck by a flying corrugated iron sheet during the incident and is currently receiving treatment.
