The government has announced plans to build the first Waqf building in the atolls, selecting Nellaidhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, for the project.

The agreement was signed at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs by Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Nellaidhoo Council President Mohamed Aleef.

Minister Dr Shaheem highlighted President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to expanding Waqf projects to support Islamic practices and community development. Nellaidhoo was chosen for the project due to its council’s outstanding proposal.

The building will include ten outlets leased for fishing-related activities. The revenue will fund mosque development and maintenance on the island. The council believes the project will also promote social and religious activities.

The Ministry plans to introduce similar Waqf projects in other islands in the future.
