Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has introduced a specialised barge to supply water to international ships as part of its maritime trade operations in Ihavandhipolhu. Built at MPL's dockyard in Thilafushi, the water barge was launched at a ceremony and has now embarked on its journey northward. With a storage capacity of 200 tonnes, the barge is designed for water bunkering, providing a significant boost to maritime services in the region.
In a statement, MPL's Managing Director Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim highlighted that this initiative reflects President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to establish new industries and strengthen the economy. Wajih noted that the water bunkering service, which began on 19 September, has already seen rapid expansion with the deployment of the water barge. A water generation plant will soon be set up on board to ensure a steady supply of water for maritime needs.
In addition to water bunkering, MPL offers various support services in northern atolls, including pilotage, crew changes, ship-to-ship transfers, launch services, supply of food and medicine, maintenance, and tug assistance.
