President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has praised the International Zero Carbon Island initiative as an important step in the global effort to combat climate change.
Speaking at the launch event in Shandong Province, China, during COP29, he highlighted the significance of low-carbon development and acknowledged China’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The President commended China for its leadership in promoting environmental sustainability and expressed his belief that the Maldives, along with other vulnerable nations, must take a proactive role in driving climate action.
He stressed the urgency of reducing emissions and protecting the environment, stating that small island nations like the Maldives are determined to be leaders in creating a sustainable future, not just victims of climate change. President Dr Muizzu also emphasised the importance of global cooperation, calling on countries at COP29 to work together to establish a clear climate finance goal.
Following the event, the President held a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang to discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation between the Maldives and China on environmental issues.
