President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the Government is considering making presidential elections a single-round process.

Speaking at the Republic Day function at Dharubaaruge on Sunday evening, the President explained that the Attorney General has been tasked with exploring how to ensure the presidential election is concluded in one round.

"I believe that in a situation where there is no second round, we can organise the election in a way that allows voters to clearly select the winner in the first round. I am confident this approach can work, as we've seen in some neighbouring countries," he said.

The President further revealed his intention to seek a vote from the public on this issue.

"If the people are in favour, we will implement a change to ensure there is only one round in future presidential elections," he stated.

"In my view, this would be a more cost-effective approach. If necessary, I will conduct this invisible vote of the people and announce the outcome," he added.

President Dr Muizzu also shared plans to hold this invisible vote from November 17 to November 11, in conjunction with the presidential and parliamentary elections, before the end of his current term.
