The government has reduced the limit on tobacco imports for tourists from 19 packs to 10 packs (200 cigarettes) per visitor.

Previously, tourists and locals could bring in limited tobacco products duty-free, but this exemption has been removed.

Under the revised policy, travellers can bring 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco duty-free, with a new exemption limit on duty of MVR 10,000 on personal imports. Additionally, a ban on vape imports begins on 15 November, with sales ceasing from next month.

The government has also increased excise duty on cigarettes by 50 per cent under the Tobacco Control Act, raising cigarette prices from MVR 105 to around MVR 240–250 per pack, in line with the nation’s health initiatives.
