The Maldives Correctional Service has suspended Mohamed Asif, Assistant Commissioner of Prisons, amid an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving the Prisons Club.

The suspension comes as authorities look into a case where over MVR 200,000 was reportedly transferred to various accounts from the club’s funds, with Asif, who serves as the club’s president, suspected to be at the centre of the alleged scheme.

A corrections official confirmed Asif's suspension to One but withheld further details due to the sensitivity of the case. Asif, who has been with the Correctional Service for years, was promoted to Assistant Commissioner in 2019 after serving as superintendent.

The incident highlights the government’s efforts to maintain transparency within its institutions, with the ongoing investigation expected to shed light on the details of the case.
