President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday congratulated US President-Elect Donald Trump.

"Warm congratulations to President-elect [Donald Trump] on your electoral victory. The Maldives and the United States share a strong partnership based on mutual respect, goodwill, and understanding," the President posted on X.

He further stated that he looks "forward to strengthening our cooperation, address mutual challenges and work towards advancing global peace and prosperity."

Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday (Nov 6), an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.

With a win in Wisconsin, Trump cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency.
