Authorities have issued a public alert regarding counterfeit MVR 500 notes that are currently in circulation, made from ordinary paper.
The police have apprehended two suspects, Aishath Shizny from Thaa Atoll Thimarafushi and Mauzoo Mohamed from Hithadhoo, Addu City, for their involvement in the counterfeit distribution.
The arrests occurred after a complaint was filed on Tuesday, leading to the recovery of 24 fake notes from the suspects. Law enforcement is advising the public to meticulously inspect the security features and quality of Maldivian Rufiyaa notes during financial transactions.
Both individuals have been brought before the Criminal Court and are now held in custody for a period of 30 days. Police are calling on anyone who encounters counterfeit currency to report it promptly to aid in their investigation.
