MP Ali Fazad has been appointed Chairperson of the parliamentary Budget Committee tasked with reviewing the government’s recently introduced supplementary budget. The decision was approved by a majority vote during today’s parliament sitting, with Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem appointed as Vice Chairperson.
The supplementary budget, presented by the government on Thursday, proposes an additional MVR 5.1 billion to the national budget, bringing this year’s total budget to MVR 55 billion—up from the original MVR 49.5 billion. This adjustment increases the budget deficit to MVR 18.4 billion.
The largest portion of the supplementary budget, MVR 2 billion, has been earmarked for Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) projects. Other key allocations include MVR 1 billion for subsidies, with additional funds directed toward student loans, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), medical supplies, and salaries.
The Budget Committee, under MP Fazad's leadership, will now begin its review of these allocations, assessing their impact and alignment with national fiscal objectives.
