Maldives Parliament today approved Maldives' bid for membership to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

As per Article 93(a) of the Constitution, international treaties signed on behalf of the State require Parliament’s approval before being ratified. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu sent the matter for Parliamentary approval earlier in the month.

The committee passed the resolution after further consideration of the President's letter to the Parliament seeking the approval of Maldives' participation in the IAEA on October 16th.

The motion was passed by a unanimous vote of 61 out of 63 members present in the session.

The decision to seek IAEA membership came after a Cabinet discussion on a proposal presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlining the steps to advance the project.
