The High Court has dismissed a petition filed by former FAM President Bassam Adeel Jaleel against the seizure of two penthouses he allegedly bought with the association's money.
The Hulhumalé Magistrate's Court ordered the handover of Bassam's two apartments to the police before the 6th of this month. However, the apartments were handed over to the police on the 8th of this month.
The Registrar at the High Court has decided not to accept the petition filed by Bassam. However, the reason is unclear.
The police investigation revealed that in 2021, Bassam embezzled USD 1 million from a USD 1.9 million loan provided by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to support football clubs during the Covid-19 pandemic. He allegedly used the money to purchase the two apartments from Amin Avenue, with payments made to Amin Construction, the developer, in three installments.
