Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) has been awarded the contract for the rebuilding of the taxiway at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The development of the VIA Taxiway Charlie is being carried out under the vision of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the 20-year masterplan for the development of Velana International Airport and the Economic Zone,
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Lixin also attended the ceremony.
The agreement was signed by MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohammed on behalf of the company. BUCG General Manager Luo Wei signed on behalf of the company.
MACL on Monday also signed an agreement with BUCG to develop a monorail system connecting Malé and K. Funadhoo. The project, first announced in May by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, will receive funding from the UAE's International Free Zone Authority (IFZA).
The monorail network will link Hulhule airport island with Malé and Hulhumale, integrating with the Sinamale Bridge.
The development is part of a broader Economic Zone Development Project, which includes the creation of the West Side Commercial Hub and enhanced connectivity to the main airport.
As part of this initiative, the existing seaplane terminal on Hulhule will be relocated to Funadhoo.
