President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has submitted a request to the Parliament seeking approval for the Maldives' participation in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
As per Article 93(a) of the Constitution, international treaties signed on behalf of the State require Parliament’s approval before being ratified.
Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, who presided over the parliamentary session, announced that the request has been forwarded to the Foreign Relations Committee for review, following the reading of the President’s letter.
The decision to seek IAEA membership came after a Cabinet discussion on a proposal presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlining the steps to advance the project.
