The new runway at Hanimaadhoo Airport was inaugurated today with the assistance of India, and 700 housing units constructed under Indian support in Hulhumale’ have been officially handed over to the Government of Maldives.
The announcement was made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they shared details of the agreements signed between the two nations as part of President Dr Muizzu's ongoing visit to India.
President Dr Muizzu noted that the 700 housing units in Hulhumale’ Phase II were developed through the Exim Bank of India's credit scheme and emphasised that these units will significantly address the country's housing challenges.
The newly constructed runway at Hanimaadhoo Airport spans 2.7 kilometers and is part of the $136 million development project funded by the Exim Bank of India. Once operational, the airport is expected to accommodate up to 1.3 million passengers annually, according to government officials.
