The Maldivian delegation walked out of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on Monday when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his speech.
Diplomats from multiple countries, including the Maldives, exited the hall in protest as Netanyahu started delivering his remarks.
According to Heena Waleed, a spokeswoman for the Maldivian President’s Office, the decision was made in line with the country's strong stance in support of the Palestinian cause.
The Maldivian delegation left the session in recognition of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to advocating for Palestine.
In his address to the General Assembly, President Dr Muizzu emphasised the need for international cooperation to address the critical situation facing the Palestinian people. He underscored the importance of upholding international law and called for full membership for Palestine in the United Nations.
