Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has stated that the Maldives Zakat House is working to provide $100,000 in aid to the Palestinian people.

The Maldives Zakat House was mandated to fortify the Maldivian Zakat system and do all necessary to expand the Zakat Fund by investing in areas in which Shariah has approved Zakat, maximizing distributor benefits.

Under this initiative, the mechanism of accepting and distributing Zakat Al-Mal, or Zakat on Wealth, and Zakat Al-Fitr, or the Zakat of Fast-Breaking will be improved, as a Shariah board will oversee the zakat system with upgrades in light of contemporary fiqh. The initiative will also conduct wide-ranging Zakat awareness campaigns for the public and the business community and attempt to end poverty in the Maldives by enabling those classified as impoverished to support themselves financially.

Speaking at a Press Conference held at the President's Office, Shaheem stated that the Zakat House of Maldives has been given a very important place in the President's manifesto and the work of the Zakat House is being carried out very successfully.

"With the blessings of Allah, the work of the Zakat House is going very successfully. The Zakat House of Maldives is sending a donation of USD 100,000 to the Palestinian people to help them participate in raising Zakat awareness," he stated.

The Qatari Red Crescent has signed an agreement with the Attorney General to send the money to the people of Palestine, he said.
