Abbas Shareef has been appointed Prosecutor General (PG).
Abbas was presented with the letter of appointment at a ceremony held at the President's Office. He was administered the oath of office by The Chief Justice of Maldives, Hon' Ahmed Mautasim Adnan.
The parliament had yesterday approved Abbas's appointment as PG. It was unanimously passed by the 85 members present at the out-of-session meeting held yesterday.
Abbas's last assignments include Secretary to the President on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs at the President's Office and a member of the Governing Board of the Maldives International Financial Service Authority.
Abbas, a law graduate from the University of Tasmania, is an advocate involved in a number of high-profile cases. He has also represented two former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
He also served as the Director General of the President's Office, a member of the Appeals Committee of fam, and a judge of the Maldives High Court from 2011 to 2015.
The PG post fell vacant following the dismissal of Hussain Shameem from the post.
