Bank of Maldives (BML)'s CEO Karl Stumke has stepped down from his post.

BML said Karl tendered his resignation on Sunday.

Karl's resignation comes in the midst of a police investigation into allegations that BML and the opposition tried to stage a financial coup.

Although Karl has resigned, he will continue until the Bank's special general meeting on September 21, the bank said in a statement.

BML will look for a person for the post of CEO of the bank and its deputy CEO Aishath Nooruddin will continue to run the bank till a person is appointed to the post, the bank said in a statement.

Aishath Nooruddin had resigned from the bank's board last month. She is one of the oldest employees of the bank.
