Adam Athuhar, 32, who was arrested for holding a woman hostage at knife-point has passed away while being treated at the ICU.

Athuhar died at 04:08 pm today, police said in a statement.

"Adam Athuhar was being treated at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital after he attempted suicide while under Police custody early last night. The Maldives Police Service is investigating the death of Adam Athuhar, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death," Police noted.

They also stressed that they will cooperate fully with the independent investigations into the case.

Police released a timeline for the incident today, noting that he was found hanging at 7:02 pm yesterday.

They further revealed that officers entered the cell the same minute, placing him on the ground and taking him out to the Dhoonidhoo Clinic on a stretcher three minutes later. Athuhar was rushed to the ER at IGMH eight minutes later, by 7:25 pm.

Athuhar, held a woman hostage at knife-point and attempted to evade arrest last Thursday night, and was later injured when the police crept up behind him and hit his head with a baton in order to rescue the victim.

Police revealed that Athuhar had been through several medical examinations, including a consultation with a neurologist, all of which have cleared him and has not identified any serious issues.

One Online can confirm reports that Athuhar and his girlfriend had money issues. Athuhar is reportedly a drug addict who also has a record of several crimes.
