Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has revealed that a Police officer was injured by the knife that Athuhar was carrying while he took a woman hostage last Thursday night.
Adam Athuhar, 32, held a woman hostage at knife-point and attempted to evade arrest, and was later injured when the police crept up behind him and hit his head with a baton in order to rescue the victim. Police revealed that Athuhar had been through several medical examinations, including a consultation with a neurologist, all of which have cleared him and has not identified any serious issues.
He has since been taken into Police custody, with the court ordering to remand him pending trial.
Speaking at a function to mark the 20th anniversary of the Maldives Police Service today, CP Shujau said the work of the police is a risky job and some policemen have been martyred while in the service.
Shujau further revealed that a policeman was injured by the sharp weapon Athuhar was carrying when he fell.
"The injuries to his fingers were the reason why the suspect escaped serious injury," Shujau said.
One Online can confirm reports that Athuhar and his girlfriend had money issues. Athuhar is reportedly a drug addict who also has a record of several crimes.
