Home Minister Ali Ihsan has said that every day prisoners spent in rehabilitation programmes will be deducted from the remainder of their sentence.
Speaking at the inauguration of 'Dhivehi Sagaafee Goathi' at Maafushi prison on Thursday, Minister Ihsan said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has made the decision to reduce rehabilitation days from prison sentences. He added that efforts are being made to explore ways to incorporate patriotism and culture into rehabilitation of prisoners.
Minister Ihsan said the idea was not to lock up prisoners but provide them with the skill-set for them to return as productive members of the society.
He said that necessary changes would be brought to the law to bring about the change.
He added that a portion of the income generated from work done at 'Dhivehi Sagaafee Goathi' would go to the inmates.
