Man arrested trying to smuggle USD 81,030 out of Maldives has been remanded for 15 days.

The Bangladeshi national was arrested on Sunday while trying to fly to Dhaka. The authorities confiscated USD stuffed into a cornflakes box which was hidden in the luggage.

A 32-year-old man, identified as Shahmin Islam Shagur, was arrested in connection with the case.

Criminal Court granted a 15 day remand period stating his arrest was in accordance with procedure. Police are investigating a money laundering case against him.

Photos and videos released by the Aviation Security Command showed the dollars being pulled out of closed packets with the names of various people written on them.

According to the country's regulations, any person who carries cash over USD 20,000 has to be declared in customs.
