President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the government does not have a majority in Bank of Maldives (BML)'s board, adding that Champa Mohamed Moosa (Uchchu) and Hussain Afeef provided great help in overturning BML's decision.
Speaking at PNC's meeting on Sunday night regarding BML's ban on USD transactions on MVR cards, President Dr. Muizzu said that there are four directors representing the BML board at present, and that the remaining 5 do not represent the government.
He highlighted the assistance provided by Champa Uchchu and Hussain Afeef in communicating with BML directors to overturn the decision on Sunday.
President Dr. Muizzu further noted that the incident was pre-planned and used as an encouragement for the public to turn against the government. He added that Police have begun a formal investigation into the matter.
"police will do professional work. The government will not allow any political interference in the police or armed forces. Police will share the findings of their investigation with the public. What happened was a pre-planned coup," President Dr. Muizzu said.
He further said that in implementing what the police investigation has pointed out, no matter who is found guilty, if it is proved to be true, then the government will not hesitate to execute the sentence.
