President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that BML's decision on Sunday to discontinue dollar support for foreign transactions was part of a premeditated coup within the Bank and that the Police will investigate the case impartially.
Speaking at the PNC House tonight, the President said that Police have begun an investigation since there was evidence that the events that followed BML's decision, including inciting protests against the government and a press conference by the former Finance Minister as encouraging a coup.
"This was premeditated. Police have already started investigating how this happened. They will conduct a professional investigation, and share their findings with the public. My government will not influence them in any way. Once you think about all these events, and connect the dots, anyone will see that this was an attempted coup," the President added.
The President highlighted that he will not hesitate to prosecute anyone found guilty by the Police and the court. He stressed that the government will not influence the court either.
The President said BML is a bank with a majority government stake but there is no government majority at the moment.
