Maldives Police Service has launched a special investigation into an alleged attempt to overthrow the government.

Police on Monday issued a press release stating that opposition politicians held press conferences on the government's financial situation at the same time as the Bank of Maldives (BML) took a shocking decision against the government's direct orders regarding foreign transactions. The press release added that several key figures including many bot accounts on social media had incited the public to take to the streets to overthrow the government and cause a civil unrest.

“There is room to believe that this was an attempt to illegally overthrow the government, hence we have started an investigation into the matter," Police further added.

Police have launched such an investigation after BML yesterday banned dollar transactions for all existing and new MVR cards. At a press brief held at the President's Office later following the reversal of the decision, Economic Minister Mohammed Saeed revealed that the change was made contrary to what President Dr Mohammed Muizzu had directly ordered.
