Parliament's Judiciary Committee has decided to hold a closed meeting over Prosecutor General (PG) Shameem's dismissal motion despite PG's request to broadcast the proceeding.

The meeting was scheduled for 1100hrs today but the committee decided on a closed meeting at 1030hrs citing sensitive issues.

Thulusdhoo MP Naseem requested to keep the meeting confidential citing it involves personal information of multiple people and therefore should respect their privacy.

Naseem further said that in a previous meeting, Shameem himself had said that the PG's comments must be held confidential.

The motion for PG's dismissal was submitted by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid. Shahid's letter to the Parliament's Judiciary Committee was read out by the committee's chair, Husnee Mubarak.

In the letter, MP Shahid pointed out that although the Constitution stipulates that the PG should function independently, openly and equitably without any interference from any party, Shameem has acted in violation of the rule.

In the letter, MP Shahid said that PG Shameem had leveraged his position to dismiss the sexual assault case against former tourism minister Ali Waheed.

"The case was filed on the grounds that there was no cooperation from the witnesses, but this was done in defence of his position as directed by the ruling MDP at that time," shahid's letter read.

Shahid said that witness testimonies can be gathered under a court order.

In his letter, Shahid stated that Shameem withdrew the case against former youth minister Ahmed Mahloof over allegations of corruption after a case was put on the agenda for his removal from the party's parliamentary group, which was then in the parliament. He also said that MDP had stopped the process of removing Shameem after Mahloof's case was withdrawn.

The letter further alleged that Shameem had misused the PG in the Safari rape case, non-appeal, withdrawal of human trafficking charges against former MP Riza, withdrawal of certain cases of same-sex marriage and non-prosecution in the ventilator case.

Shahid also pointed out that Shameem was discriminating against the staff of the PG office as well.
