Male' City Council has dismissed Secretary General (SG) Wajeeh Naseer.

SG Wajeeh's dismissal was proposed by Deputy Mayor Ahmed Naresh at the Council meeting today.

Naresh said Wajeeh was trying to portray the former Councils' achievements as non-existent and had made councillors wait several days on documents.

"The SG is responsible for everything, including finances. The delays at the council are due to him. No action has been taken against the SG even after multiple issues raised by councillors," Naresh said.

Mayor Adam Azim defended Wajeeh during the meeting, stating that he has been accountable despite delays. Azim added that the delays were also due to administrative issues.

"There is no issue of integrity," Azim said, adding that Wajeeh has high integrity and is capable in his role.

Galolhu Uthuru Council member Mohamed Saif Fatih said the SG should be given an opportunity to respond to the allegations, so it would be best to give him a chance to respond in writing next week and if a vote is taken today, he will not participate in the vote.

However, following the remarks, Galolhu Dhekunu councillor Ibrahim Mohamed retaliated that Wajeeh had been given multiple chances to amend his ways.

Eleven members voted in favour of dismissing Wajeeh while Saif and Machangoalhi Dhekunu councillor Aishath Nazima refrained from voting.

With the Council voting in favour of dismissing Wajeeh, the Civil Service Commission will now be required to take a decision on the matter.
