Maldives Meteorology (MET) has issued a white alert across the Maldives ahead of monsoon rains.

According to the Nakaiy Calendar, it is currently the tenth Nakaiy of Hulhangu, 'Maa', which is generally calm. However, an old Maldivian saying is observed that if the previous Nakaiy had been stormy, then 'Maa' will also be stormy. The Nakaiy began on August 11th and will end August 23rd.

The MET Office forecasts heavy rain with thunderstorms from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m today, and has issued a White Alert across the country.

Winds will be between 19 and 24 mph with gusts up to 45 mph in the afternoon. Seas will be rough, the Met Office said.

The MET Office recorded the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours in Maamigili with 62.0 milliliters of rain.
