Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has inspected the progress of the Thilamalé Bridge Project, which is being built under Indian assistance.
He was accompanied by Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer and Infrastructure Minister Abdullah Muthalib to inspect the work of the Bridge.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said the "flagship project will enhance connectivity and stimulate the economy."
Funded by USD 100 million in free aid and USD 400 million from Line of Credit from India, the Thilamalé Bridge project is the biggest project run by India in the Maldives. An agreement was signed between Afcons Infrastructure and the Government of Maldives in August 2021 to finish the project within two years.
Work on the project kicked off in August 2022.
The project is expected to be completed by September 30, 2026, the Infrastructure Ministry said.
The bridge project will include the construction of a 6.7-kilometer-long bridge along with a causeway link. The main bridges to be built between the islands are expected to measure around 140 meters each.
